Lexington, Kentucky (November 23, 2021)-Gobble Grease Toss on Black Friday turns green! If you are frying turkey on Thanksgiving this year, you can recycle used cooking oil for free at the Redwood Cooperative School at 166 Crestwood Drive in Lexington on Friday, November 26. The activity time is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Gobble Grease Toss allows Lexington residents to transfer hundreds of gallons of cooking oil that would otherwise end up in the trash. Never pour cooking oil into the sink drain, as it will block the pipes of your home and the city’s sewer system.

The collected edible oil will be used for biofuel research through a community partnership with the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER), and Kelley Green Biofuel will recycle the remaining edible oil.

“For many years, with the support of the National Science Foundation and the UK’s sustainable development, CAER in the UK has been studying the conversion of fats, oils and greases into fuel-like hydrocarbons. Gobble Grease Toss allows us to obtain used products from people’s homes. It connects our research with the community. Due to the limited processing capacity of CAER, the cooperation with Kelley Green Biofuel ensures that all the collected oil is converted into fuel.” Chemistry.

The students and families of the Redwood Cooperative School are looking forward to co-hosting Gobble Grease Toss on their campus for the sixth time.

"Environmental literacy is a key principle of our school principles, and this event provides our students with another way to understand clean energy and environmental sustainability," said Sarah Cummins, head of Redwood. "They understand that our daily choices will have an impact on the environment and their future. Our student leadership team will be ready to help with this event and encourage the Lexington community to take responsibility for the cooking oil waste this holiday season."

Gobble Grease Toss is free for all Fayette County residents (please do not do business). Please put the edible oil in a disposable container with a lid in the trunk. Stay in the car and be ready to open the trunk lid when you arrive. A volunteer will remove the oil for you.

If you cannot participate in Gobble Grease Toss, you can properly dispose of it by hardening the cooking oil in the refrigerator and putting it in a green garbage truck.
